At Apéro, our core values go beyond the wardrobe, as we believe in giving back and playing our part in bettering our sustainable footprint on the world. While promoting our ethical fashion, we are also continually adapting our workplace sustainability practices, seeking opportunities to support and partner with charities, create a community that empowers women, source natural and recycled materials and reduce our carbon footprint.
LOCALLY AUSTRALIAN DESIGNED
When you shop with Apéro, you are supporting a local Australian business. All Apéro pieces are designed with love in our Brisbane office. We are continually striving for inclusive and thoughtful designs that cater to a range of different women – ages, body shapes, skin tones and stages of life (bump friendly/breastfeeding friendly). Our pieces are inspired by stylish timelessness and longevity as we want women to feel good in our tees and fashion pieces for years to come.
PREFERRED FIBRES
At Apéro, our preferred fabrics of choice are natural fibres such as linen, tencel, cupro, rayon and cotton. Although not all our clothing is made from 100% natural fibres, we are constantly sourcing fabrics with sustainability in the forefront of our mind. We recognise that natural fibres, such as cotton, can contribute to a lot of waste and water usage through the manufacturing process. In 2021, we are excited to roll out a new 100% recycled cotton fabric that will replace the current cotton used in our signature core Apéro tee range. Recycled cotton is re-purposed, post-industrial, or post-consumer cotton that would otherwise end up in landfill. Swapping to recycled cotton with our women’s tees can greatly reduce water and energy consumption in sustainable fashion and apparel, as well as reduce landfill waste and space.
ETHICAL MANUFACTURING
Our clothing is manufactured in Guangzhou, China. Our factories have all undergone assessment and certification by Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) for fair trade approval. Sedex is one of the world’s leading ethical trade membership organisations, working with businesses to improve working conditions in global supply chains. They provide an online platform, tools, and services to help businesses operate responsibly, sustainably and protect workers in producing ethically sourced clothing. Their auditing method includes full site tours and assessment of factories, documentation reviews, employee and management interviews, Corrective Action Plan (CAPR) preparation, closing report and feedback.
POWER THROUGH PURCHASE
When you purchase from Apéro, you are helping empower other women. Each month, we donate 5% of profits from all online sales to Women’s Community Shelters. This Australian-based charity provides refuge and practical help for women who are homeless or subject to domestic abuse. Women’s Community Shelters works with communities to establish new shelters, which provide short-term emergency accommodation and help in a safe environment. They also provide support services such as counselling, health care, legal assistance, and education, to help women rebuild self-esteem and build a new life for themselves.
Additionally, we have integrated with Future Neutral and offer this initiative to our customers as part of the checkout process on any Apéro item/s. This feature allows customers to add carbon offset at the checkout, helping reduce their annual footprint and taking climate action. This is done by donating a small percentage of their sale to certified carbon offset projects that reduce, avoid, or remove greenhouse gas and emissions from the atmosphere.
ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS PACKAGING
When packing your orders, we place your pieces in a natural fibre fabric drawstring bag. This bag not only protects your clothing through the shipping process but can also be re-used for an array of purposes, meaning they don’t get thrown straight into landfill.
All orders are then packaged in 100% compostable, re-usable, zero waste mailers from Hero Packaging. These 100% sustainable poly mailers are made from plant-based products, PLA, and compostable materials, such as corn starch, to help reduce our plastic waste and landfill contribution. Customers can re-use their mailers before cutting them up and adding them to their home compost bins to decompose over 3-4 months. If these mailers do end up in landfill, they will still decompose, unlike traditional plastic poly mailers.
